What to Evaluate in Ultra-Low-Latency Connectivity

Six practical areas determine whether a low-latency route fits the strategy: endpoints, venue, capacity, performance, resiliency and support.

Start with the exact origin and destination

Every ULL engagement starts with two precise points—not a general area. The specific building, meet-me room or cage can determine which physical paths are possible.

The same discipline applies at the far end. “Connectivity to the exchange” can mean several different points of presence depending on the venue.

Identify the target exchange or market-data source

A route designed for order routing may have different requirements from a route designed to receive market data. Knowing whether the requirement is one or both changes the bandwidth and redundancy conversation.

Size bandwidth to actual, not headline, throughput

Market-data volume can spike around the open, close and high-volatility events. A route sized only for average traffic can bottleneck exactly when performance matters most.

Separate latency from predictability

A route with a strong average latency but wide variance can be less useful than a slightly slower route that performs consistently. Ask for jitter and variance—not only round-trip time.

Plan redundancy before you need it

A single path, however fast, remains a single point of failure. Redundancy can range from a fully diverse backup route to simpler failover depending on the strategy’s sensitivity to downtime.

Confirm the level of operational support

Understand who monitors the service, how degradation is escalated, what support is available outside normal hours and which performance commitments are documented.

Common questions

Is the fastest available route always the right choice?

Not necessarily. The fastest route on paper is not useful if it is inconsistent, under-provisioned for peak volume or lacks appropriate redundancy and support.

How long does it typically take to stand up a new ULL route?

Timelines vary by path, building access, equipment, cross connects and whether new infrastructure must be constructed. Exact endpoints and the target date are needed for a realistic estimate.
