Direct answer
SD-WAN applies centralized policy, application awareness and path selection across underlying Internet, private, broadband or wireless connections; it does not replace the need to choose those circuits carefully.
The underlay still matters
SD-WAN can direct traffic across several paths, but latency, packet loss, capacity, physical diversity and provider support still come from the underlying circuits. Each location should receive access appropriate to its criticality.
Define application policy
Identify real-time voice and video, cloud applications, private workloads, backup traffic and security inspection. Policies should reflect business priority and the behavior expected when one path degrades or fails.
Coordinate a global rollout
Multi-site deployments require local access sourcing, hardware logistics, cutover planning, monitoring and escalation across providers and time zones. One architecture may use different access technologies by site.
