New Jersey Equities Triangle: Connectivity Between Mahwah, Carteret and Secaucus

Last updated: September 25, 2026

SpartaLink helps trading firms, market makers and market-data providers evaluate connectivity across the three New Jersey sites where most U.S. equity trading happens. That covers wireless and fiber routes between the sites, cross-connects inside them, and links out to Chicago, London and the cloud.

Direct answer: What is the NJ equities triangle?

The New Jersey equities triangle connects the Mahwah, Carteret and Secaucus trading clusters. Within Secaucus, NY4 and NY5 are distinct Equinix facilities with different venue roles. Route planning should distinguish matching engines from points of presence and identify the exact building, suite and handoff.

The four key hubs of the NJ equities triangle

Three towns contain four facilities worth distinguishing in a route request. The venue matching engine and the available access point can be in different buildings.

Location and facilityPhysical operatorKey markets and access points
Carteret, NJ
Equinix NY11
EquinixNasdaq, Nasdaq Texas (formerly Nasdaq BX), and Nasdaq PSX.
Mahwah, NJ
NYSE U.S. Liquidity Center
Intercontinental Exchange (ICE)NYSE, NYSE Arca, NYSE American, and NYSE National.
Secaucus, NJ
Equinix NY4
EquinixMEMX Equities and MIAX Pearl Equities primary sites; Nasdaq point of presence for its Carteret markets.
Secaucus, NJ
Equinix NY5
EquinixCboe BZX, BYX, EDGA and EDGX equities; IEX point of presence. IEX’s matching engine is in Weehawken.

Also in Secaucus: the Texas Stock Exchange identifies Equinix NY6 as its primary data center. These four rows distinguish the requested hubs; they are not an exhaustive venue inventory.

Facility and venue references: Nasdaq, NYSE, MEMX, MIAX, Cboe, IEX, and TXSE.

What’s changing in the triangle

The Texas Stock Exchange completed activation of all U.S. equity symbols on July 31, 2026, with its matching engine at Equinix NY6 in Secaucus. That adds a new venue to the Secaucus leg rather than a new site, but firms quoting on it may need additional cross-connects, capacity and market-data handling.

Routes within the triangle

  • Mahwah – Secaucus: links the NYSE group with Cboe, TXSE and the NY4 ecosystem.
  • Secaucus – Carteret: links the Secaucus campus with Nasdaq.
  • Mahwah – Carteret: direct NYSE-to-Nasdaq path, or via Secaucus.
  • Inside Secaucus: confirm cross-facility connectivity among NY4, NY5 and NY6, including the specific exchange handoff and any latency equalization.

Wireless vs. fiber inside the triangle

The fastest paths between the three sites use millimeter-wave, microwave and free-space optics, measured in microseconds. These links carry less capacity than fiber and are more exposed to weather, and heavy rain can affect every wireless leg at once. Fiber provides capacity and consistency for market data, bulk traffic and failover. Most latency-sensitive firms combine both.

Beyond the triangle

What to define before requesting triangle routes

  1. Which legs: all three sites, or specific pairs.
  2. Exact endpoints: building and suite at each site, and who orders the cross-connects.
  3. Traffic type: order entry, market data, or both, plus bandwidth at peak activity.
  4. Latency method: one-way or round-trip, measurement points, jitter tolerance.
  5. Diversity: whether backup paths share towers, conduit or building entrances — and how the design performs in bad weather.

NJ equities triangle FAQ

What is the New Jersey equities triangle?

The three northern New Jersey sites that host most U.S. equity matching engines: NYSE in Mahwah, Nasdaq in Carteret, and the Equinix campus in Secaucus.

Which exchanges are in Mahwah, Carteret and Secaucus?

NYSE markets are in Mahwah; Nasdaq markets are in Carteret at Equinix NY11. Secaucus includes MEMX and MIAX Pearl Equities at NY4, Cboe U.S. equities at NY5, and TXSE at NY6. IEX has an NY5 access point, but its matching engine is in Weehawken.

Why do trading firms connect all three sites?

The same securities trade on venues at every site, so firms need fast market data and order routing between all three to price and trade consistently.

Is wireless or fiber better inside the triangle?

Wireless is faster but carries less capacity and is more sensitive to weather. Most latency-sensitive firms use wireless for critical traffic and fiber for capacity and backup.

Where is the Texas Stock Exchange’s matching engine?

At Equinix NY6 in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Can SpartaLink compare triangle route providers?

Yes. SpartaLink is provider-neutral and compares wireless and fiber options on each leg against your endpoints, performance targets and budget.
